What if I am married filing separately?

If you are married and filing a separate return from your spouse some of the rules regarding deductions and credits change. In addition, you will be taxed at higher rate then you would if you filed jointly with your spouse.

The following deductions are not available to taxpayers who file separately from their spouse:

  • Student loan interest deduction

  • Tuition and fees deduction

In addition, if your spouse itemizes deductions you are required to itemize. This is true even if you would get a higher deduction by using the standard deduction. This fact is not reflected by the estimator, which uses the greater of the itemized deductions or the standard deduction.
