Current-year amended returns for online clients

Preparing an Amended Return
To use the software program to create an amended return, begin by printing the return prepared and filed using our online program. If you're amending this year's return, do not make any changes to the return before printing this copy.
  • Guidance for printing your current year return.
  • Guidance for printing a return from a prior year.

In preparing the amended return, you will recreate your original, making any necessary changes, in the software program. Once that's complete, you will open the amended return form, 1040X, and enter the information from your original return in the fields indicated.

We'll walk you through the steps below to create the amended return:
  1. Open the software program.
  2. Click Start a Tax Return.
  3. Click Create a New Return.
  4. Re-enter your return information by completing the software interviews. This time, include any changes that need to be made. For example, if you are preparing an amended return because you received an additional 1099 or W-2, be sure to include that information in the proper interview.
  5. Once you've completed the return and corrected any errors indicated in the error check, you will complete the 1040X. To do this, have on hand the original return prepared using the online program.
  6. In the software program, click Forms in the grey menu bar at the top of the screen.
  7. Select Open Forms.
  8. Scroll down and select Form 1040X.
  9. Click Open Form.
  10. Part C - Explanation of Changes: Give a brief description as to why you are filing a 1040X.

  11. Review the form for any additional information that you may need to add. For instance, the amount paid with your extension or when you originally filed the return or the amount of overpayment you received as a refund. You will manually enter this information onto Form 1040X.
  12. Page 2 - Exemptions: If you are changing your exemptions and/or dependents, you will need to complete this section.

  13. Once you've made all of your corrections, complete and print this form. To print the form, click the Print icon at the top of the screen.
  14. Select the "Print for filing" radio button.
  15. Click OK.
  16. Click Close Form.
  17. Next, print a "for filing" copy of any additional forms or schedules that support changes made to your return. For example, if you made changes to entries related to a rental property, the schedule E would reflect those changes and would need to be printed and included with your 1040X.

Mailing Instructions
Mail your amended return including all supporting documents and applicable forms and schedules to your assigned IRS Center as indicated in the table below. If you are filing Form 1040X in response to a notice you received from the IRS, mail the form to the address indicated in
the notice.

Current-year amended returns for software clients

Preparing an Amended Return
You make changes to a return that's already been filed and accepted by the IRS by filing an amendment using Form 1040X. This form must be filed on paper with the IRS and can be created using H&R Block At Home Software.

We'll walk you through the steps below to create the amended return. Note: Although you can create a Form 1040X for any year using the current year's version of our software, if you used our product for the year you're amended, we recommend you use that product to prepare your 1040X. Prior-year amended returns for online clients

Preparing an Amended Return
The online program does not support creating returns for a prior year. In order to create an amended 2009 return, the 2009 software product will be needed. This product is available by clicking here.

  • NOTICE OF CHANGES IN TEMPORARY FDIC INSURANCE
    COVERAGE FOR TRANSACTION ACCOUNTS

All funds in a "noninterest-bearing transaction account" are insured in full by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation from December 31, 2010, through December 31, 2012. This temporary unlimited coverage is in addition to, and separate from, the coverage of at least $250,000 available to depositors under the FDIC's general deposit insurance rules.

The term "noninterest-bearing transaction account" includes a traditional checking account or demand deposit account on which the insured depository institution pays no interest. It also includes Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts ("IOLTAs"). It does not include other accounts, such as traditional checking or demand deposit accounts that may earn interest, NOW accounts, and money-market deposit accounts.

For more information about temporary FDIC insurance coverage of transaction accounts, visit www.fdic.gov.
