Getting an Extension
Not ready to file April 15? You may want to request an extension to file your federal income tax return. You can get an automatic 6-month extension to Oct. 15, and you don't need to supply a reason or even a signature.
But keep in mind, an extension of time to file does not mean an extension of time to pay. If you do not pay your balance due on tax day, you may be charged interest or penalties on the amount of federal income tax you owe.
To get an extension, file Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S.Individual Income Tax Return. The federal income tax form and instructions are available at the IRS Web site. There are several options for filing an extension as well as paying a balance due.
If you reside outside of the U.S. at filing time, you are eligible for an automatic 2-month extension to June 15 to file. You do not need to request this extension or submit any federal income tax forms. If you need additional time, file Form 4868 and check the box on line 8 to get an additional 4-month extension to Oct. 15.
Note: You are not entitled to the automatic 2-month extension if you are merely taking a vacation or are on a business trip outside the U.S.
