Self-Employment Income
Self-employment income is income you earn from a trade or business. If you work for yourself, you will earn self-employment income from your trade or profession, such as carpentry, legal or accounting services, a home day care business, or consulting.

You might also earn self-employment income by being a member of a partnership with trade or business activities, or by operating a farm.

Earnings from a part-time activity can be self-employment income.

Income and expenses from renting real estate are not from self-employment unless you are a real estate dealer or provide services to your tenants.

Reduce your estimated self-employment income by your estimated expenses for the activity, including supplies, cost of goods, use of an automobile, home office expenses, and depreciation.

Self-employment income and expenses are reported on your tax return on Schedule C or F.
